How to use your result
- Include every direct cost: materials, stock, packaging, card fees and direct labour.
- Use prices before VAT, GST or sales tax.
- Check your busiest products or services first. Small price changes there make the biggest difference.
- Add your monthly fixed costs to see how many sales you need before you make a profit.
Margin or markup?
Margin is profit as a share of the price; markup is profit as a share of the cost. Something that costs 40 and sells for 100 has a 60% margin and a 150% markup. Mixing them up is one of the most common pricing mistakes.

Questions about this tool
What's the difference between margin and markup?
Margin = (price − cost) ÷ price. Markup = (price − cost) ÷ cost. A 50% markup is only a 33% margin.
How do I price for a margin?
Price = cost ÷ (1 − margin). For a 60% margin on something that costs 20, charge 20 ÷ 0.4 = 50.
What does break-even mean here?
The number of sales each month whose profit covers your fixed costs. Every sale after that is profit.
