How to use your result
- Choose your tax, or type your own rate.
- Pick whether your price is before tax or already includes it.
- Copy the figures onto your invoice or quote.
- If you're not sure which rate applies to what you sell, check with your accountant or tax office.
Taking tax out of a price
To find the price before tax, divide by 1 plus the rate. For 20% VAT, divide by 1.2: 120 including VAT is 100 plus 20 VAT. Taking 20% off 120 gives 96, which is wrong. That's the most common VAT mistake.
Rates we checked
UK: standard rate 20% and reduced rate 5%, with some items at 0%. Australia: GST is 10%. US: sales tax is set by states and often by cities and counties, so the rate depends on where the sale happens. Rates change, so check the official source before you rely on one.

Questions about this tool
How do I remove 20% VAT from a price?
Divide the price by 1.2. The answer is the price before VAT, and the difference is the VAT.
Do I have to charge VAT or GST?
That depends on your turnover and what you sell. In the UK you must register once VAT-taxable turnover passes £90,000; in Australia, GST registration is needed from A$75,000 turnover. Ask your accountant if you're near either.
Is this tax advice?
No. It does the sums. Which rate applies to what you sell, and when you need to register, is a question for your accountant or tax office.
