What to include on your estimate
- A clear description of the work, stage by stage
- Allowances for items the customer hasn't chosen yet
- What's not included
- How long the price is valid
- Payment stages, if you'll invoice in parts
Tips
- Say whether it's an estimate (your best guess, which may change) or a quote (a fixed price). Customers often treat the two differently.
- List exclusions. They prevent more disputes than anything else on the page.
- Use allowances for things the customer still has to pick, so the total stays honest.
- Follow up a few days after sending. Many jobs go to the builder who calls back.

Questions about this tool
What's the difference between an estimate and a quote?
An estimate is an approximate price that can change as the job becomes clearer. A quote is usually a fixed price for the work described. Use the switch at the top to choose.
What's an allowance?
A set amount for something not yet chosen, like tiles or a kitchen. If the customer picks something dearer, the price goes up by the difference.
Can I turn it into an invoice later?
Yes. Switch the document type to Invoice, change the number and dates, and adjust the lines to what was actually done.
