Tips for naming your business
- Surname-based names ("Harris & Sons Building") sound established and are easy to trust, which matters on big jobs.
- Think about the work you want more of. A name with "Roofing" in it brings roofing calls, and makes it harder to sell extensions.
- The name will go on licences, insurance, contracts and the van, so pick one you're happy to keep for years.
- Check what your licensing body needs. Some require the name on your licence to match the name you trade under.
Before you decide, check
- Your licensing body or trade association's rules on business names
- Company or business register and trade mark register
- Google Maps and Houzz or Checkatrade-style directories nearby
- The web address

Questions about this tool
Should a construction company name include the trade?
If you specialise, yes. It brings the right enquiries. If you take on all kinds of building work, a general name with "Construction" or "Building" keeps your options open.
Are family names still good for builders?
They're the classic choice for a reason: they suggest a firm that stands behind its work. Combine one with the trade for clarity.
Can I add words like my town or service to my Google listing name?
Only if they're part of your real business name, used on your sign and paperwork. Google asks that the name on your Business Profile matches the name you use in the real world, so choose the full name you want from the start.
