How is the number worked out?
Your current rating and review count, plus new reviews at the average you choose, give your new rating. The calculator finds the smallest number of new reviews that makes Google show the same rating as the business above you, or 0.1 higher. Google shows one decimal, so 4.55 and above displays as 4.6.
Why not assume every new review is 5 stars?
Real businesses get the odd 4-star review. Planning on 4.8 gives a number you can actually hit. Choose 5.0 if you want the best case.
Does passing them on reviews mean I'll rank above them?
Not on its own. Google also weighs distance, relevance, your profile and how recent your reviews are. Reviews are one of the strongest signals you control, which is why they're worth planning.
Can I buy or filter reviews to get there faster?
No. Google bans paid reviews and asking only happy customers, and it can remove reviews or suspend a profile for it. Ask every customer the same way, every week.
